Though the speed of the Gulf Stream greatly exceeds the speed of a glider, gliders can be flown across the current as they are advected downstream. Missions prior to 2015 were conducted downstream (northeast) of Cape Hatteras, primarily between Cape Cod and Bermuda; missions since 2015 begin in Miami, FL and are planned to end on the New England continental shelf. During a typical 100-day mission between Miami and Cape Cod, a single glider completes 6-10 crossings of the Gulf Stream, returning approximately 800 profiles to the shallower of the sea floor or 1000 m. The current operational goal is to maintain at least one glider in the Gulf Stream at all times. These transports have been measured since 2007 by underwater gliders crossing the Sea seasonally to monthly. Ocean temperature and salinity profiles and depth-average current are measured every few km to depths of 500 to 1000 m. Velocity shear can be inferred from measured density. The CUGN data provides climatologies and the interannual anomaly of the sea water temperature near the California Coast which are used to generate the SCTI.\n        The Southern California Temperature Index represents a smoothed temperature anomaly variability near the coast of California, similar to the Oceanic Nino Index (ONI), using local in-situ data to provide a regional index. The Socal Index is calculated using a subset of the CUGN Line 90 glider climatology data. The index is created using water temperature data at 50-m depth for the nearhsore 200-km section of all Line 90 data extending back to 2006. These data are averaged over the 200-km section to provide a time-series of the average temperature for this area at 50-m depth. The glider data is then averaged at a 3-month (90-day) interval. This aligns the time signature of the index with the ONI and allows for comparison of the two data products. The SCTI data are updated monthly after the monthly NOAA Nino 3.4 data are released. \n        An Oceanic Niño Index variable is included with the SCTI. This variable is calculated using the Niño 3.4 index, and applying a 3-month average to it. One of these 'cross-overs' was located offshore of Cape Hatteras, NC where the Gulf Stream detaches from the continetal margin. In support of the calibration and validation of the SWOT measurements of sea surface topography, Spray gliders sampled within this cross-over as part of the SWOT Adopt-A-Crossover - MAB-SWOT campaign (https://www.swot-adac.org/campaigns/mab-swot/) in 2023. Gliders primarily attempted to hold station at the center of a triangular array of CPIEs just north of the Gulf Stream. As part of PEACH, Spray gliders surveyed along the upper continental slope and across the outer continental shelf for more than two years during a series of missions from spring 2017 to spring 2019. Typical sampling was to a maximum depth of 500 m or to within a few meters of the seafloor in shallower water; occasional deeper sampling occurred if gliders encountered adverse currents.
