Though the speed of the Gulf Stream greatly exceeds the speed of a glider, gliders can be flown across the current as they are advected downstream. Missions prior to 2015 were conducted downstream (northeast) of Cape Hatteras, primarily between Cape Cod and Bermuda; missions since 2015 begin in Miami, FL and are planned to end on the New England continental shelf. During a typical 100-day mission between Miami and Cape Cod, a single glider completes 6-10 crossings of the Gulf Stream, returning approximately 800 profiles to the shallower of the sea floor or 1000 m. The current operational goal is to maintain at least one glider in the Gulf Stream at all times. Additional plots of these data are available at http://gliders.whoi.edu.\n\ncdm_data_type = TrajectoryProfile\nVARIABLES:\nprofile\nmission (Mission name of each trajectory)\ndepth (m)\ntime (seconds since 1970-01-01T00:00:00Z)\nlatitude (degrees_north)\nlongitude (degrees_east)\ntemperature (Sea Water Temperature, degree_C)\nsalinity (Sea Water Practical Salinity, 1)\nacoustic_backscatter (dB)\nacoustic_backscatter_flag\nu (Eastward Sea Water Velocity, m s-1)\nv (Northward Sea Water Velocity, m s-1)\ntime_uv (Time, seconds since 1970-01-01T00:00:00Z)\nlat_uv (Latitude, degrees_north)\nlon_uv (Longitude, degrees_east)\nu_depth_mean (Depth-Averaged Eastward Sea Water Velocity, m s-1)\nv_depth_mean (Depth-Averaged Northward Sea Water Velocity, m s-1)\n https://spraydata.ucsd.edu/erddap/metadata/fgdc/xml/binnedGS_fgdc.xml https://spraydata.ucsd.edu/erddap/metadata/iso19115/xml/binnedGS_iso19115.xml https://spraydata.ucsd.edu/erddap/info/binnedGS/index.htmlTable https://spraydata.ucsd.edu/projects/GS https://spraydata.ucsd.edu/erddap/rss/binnedGS.rss https://spraydata.ucsd.edu/erddap/subscriptions/add.html?datasetID=binnedGS&showErrors=false&email= Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution binnedGS

The degree to which this flow affects the equatorial zone and global climate depends on its transport of water and heat. These transports have been measured since 2007 by underwater gliders crossing the Sea seasonally to monthly. Ocean temperature and salinity profiles and depth-average current are measured every few km to depths of 500 to 1000 m. Velocity shear can be inferred from measured density. Phenomena of interest are El Nino - Southern Oscillation (ENSO) and flow in the Equatorial Undercurrent.\n\ncdm_data_type = TrajectoryProfile\nVARIABLES:\nprofile\nmission (Mission name of each trajectory)\ndepth (m)\ntime (seconds since 1970-01-01T00:00:00Z)\nlatitude (degrees_north)\nlongitude (degrees_east)\ntemperature (Sea Water Temperature, degree_C)\nsalinity (Sea Water Practical Salinity, 1)\ntime_uv (Time, seconds since 1970-01-01T00:00:00Z)\nlat_uv (Latitude, degrees_north)\nlon_uv (Longitude, degrees_east)\nu_depth_mean (Depth-Averaged Eastward Sea Water Velocity, m s-1)\nv_depth_mean (Depth-Averaged Northward Sea Water Velocity, m s-1)\n https://spraydata.ucsd.edu/erddap/metadata/fgdc/xml/binnedSolomon_fgdc.xml https://spraydata.ucsd.edu/erddap/metadata/iso19115/xml/binnedSolomon_iso19115.xml https://spraydata.ucsd.edu/erddap/info/binnedSolomon/index.htmlTable https://spraydata.ucsd.edu/projects/Solomon https://spraydata.ucsd.edu/erddap/rss/binnedSolomon.rss https://spraydata.ucsd.edu/erddap/subscriptions/add.html?datasetID=binnedSolomon&showErrors=false&email= University of California - San Diego; Scripps binnedSolomon
